Chapter Sixteen

Aurelis refused to carry Ronan. Or the troll. Or me. So Ronan and I used one of the bathrooms we’d passed to rinse off the bulk of the iron filings, and then the troll carried Ronan. Even after the bullet wound in his foot reopened and began to ooze blood.

I walked beside them, keeping an eye out for threats. The dragon flew lazy circles above our heads, unable to fly slow enough to match our pace but sick of being bound to the earth.

The sun was high in the sky and glared down at us with a ferocity that made me glad for my involuntary soaking. Even if it did mean my shoes squelched and underwear chafed with every step. Our nocturnal friend was fine with the heat but had to shut his secondary eyelids, which were made of something like smoky but translucent quartz, to protect his eyes from the excessive brightness.

Thankfully, the nearest gateway to Faerie proved not to be far. Either that or Ronan let us walk aimlessly until he recovered enough to open one and pretended it had been there all along. I didn’t know how the gateways worked.

But as we approached the unremarkable patch of dirt and rock, my pulse sped up. I’d never been to Faerie. To humans, it was a highly exclusive holiday destination for the rich. Which had counted me out. But if tales of its splendor had lasted through the centuries, I figured it must be pretty extraordinary.

The method of getting there turned out to be less splendid.

I stepped onto the patch of earth Ronan indicated. Except I didn’t. I experienced the brief panicky sensation of not finding the ground where you expect it to be just before you fall, and then it felt like hundreds of tiny, none-too-gentle hands were yanking me downward, then sideways, upward, and backward while the cold, hard claws of something ancient raked across my brain.

Then my foot landed on solid ground and all the sensations stopped.

I opened my eyes, even though I couldn’t remember shutting them, expecting to see a world of soaring trees and summer meadows—postcard-perfect wherever you looked.

Instead, everything was pure white. The floor. The walls and ceiling if either even existed. Light did not work the same way here to allow me to perceive shadows or dimensions or edges. Everything was unbroken, unending, cheerfully confounding white. Besides the people who looked normal but for the lack of shadows.

Groups of affluent travelers like you might see at an airport stood waiting, glued to their phones, or walked around followed by the new automated suitcases that trailed obediently after their owners. Why not if you had the money? And if you were holidaying in Faerie, you had the money.

Several of them were turning to stare, probably at Aurelis.

Alongside the rich tourists, there were various fae-kin striding, flying, or slithering about with matching uniforms and an officious air. Some of these were checking over the baggage of incoming visitors with spheres of glittering light. Others were guiding them from one indiscernible white spot to another.
